TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

FT Scholarship Award: This award is to be used for the express purpose of flight training for any pilot certificate and/or flight rating issued by the FAA at any facility offering flight training under the aegis of Part 61, Part 141, or any future Part of the Federal Air Regulations enacted to govern flight training.

MT Scholarship Award: This award is to be used for the express purpose of Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) education and training provided by any facility offering aircraft maintenance training under the aegis of Part 65 or Part 147, or any future Part of the of the Federal Air Regulations enacted to govern maintenance training.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS - MUST BE MET BY ALL APPLICANTS

Scholarship awards are open to all individuals, regardless of gender, race or national origin, who can meet the general criteria listed below and the specific selection criteria that follow. All applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Be able to read, write and speak English to FAA standards
• Write an essay (not to exceed 500 words) outlining your career goals in aviation and your interests, any special qualifications and experiences. Comment on your educational and employment accomplishments to date.
• Be a resident of San Diego County, California at the time of application.
• Submit a letter of recommendation endorsed by an aviation professional, for example, Chief Pilot for FT Awards, Program Director for MT Awards.

FLIGHT TRAINING (FT) - REQUIREMENTS 

In addition to the General Requirements above, FT Scholarship Candidates must:

• Have completed at least 10 hours of flight instruction in a Part 61 or Part 141 flight school and be endorsed by the Chief Pilot of the flight school attended
• Possess a student pilot certificate, or higher, with a third-class medical certificate.
• Be at least 16 but less than 35 years old at time of application.

MAINTENANCE TRAINING (MT) -  REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the General Requirements above, MT Scholarship Candidates must:

• Have completed at least 15 academic hours with at least a “Bâ€� average in an accredited aircraft maintenance technician FAA approved (AMT) program; AND,
• Be currently enrolled in an accredited Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) program at an approved FAA Part 147 school, and be endorsed by the Program Director of the school attended.

APPLICATION

• Applications must be prepared using the appropriate form available from the various participating instititutions, or by request from the AAASDC office (see below for address and phone number). Essays, of 500 words or less must be prepared using a word processor
• For FT applications, include certified copy of complete flight log and copies of medical or a student pilot certificate.
• For MT, Applications, include certified copy of school or college transcript.
• Include letter of recommendation with endorsement by an aviation professional.
• Indicate name and address of school or flight training facility where funds will be sent and administered should an award be made.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• Scholarship funding will be provided to the educational institution or flight school designated above for administration. Should an award recipient terminate voluntarily or be terminated from the associated aviation training program, any funds remaining will be returned to the AAASDC.
• Designated scholarship funds must be expended within one year of the date of award. Any balance remaining after that date is to be returned to the AAA-SDC.
• Successful applicants will be notified of their awards by January 15th of a given year. Funding of awards will be made to the respective administrators at that time. Presentation of awards will be made at the AAA-SDC annual banquet held on the last Saturday in January of each year.
• Scholarship award recipients are required to sign an agreement acknowledging that neither the San Diego Chapter of the Antique Airplane Association nor the National AAA organization are responsible for the quality of training received or for any accident, incident or any other event which might occur while the award recipient is receiving training or performing activities related thereto.
